Cot Deaths

Sir,—Concerning an article on cot deaths on April 7, I would like to ask if there is any definite evidence to prove that cold is a predisposing factor in cot deaths. If this is a conclusion reached because more babies die during winter, then death could as likely be caused by overheating, where

caring mothers overclothe their babies during these cold months. Christchurch temperatures fluctuate enormously, especially with the nor’westers, and temperatures can rise or fall during the night. In Canada and Sweden more houses are centrally heated, with temperatures, controlled. I would like to suggest that the comments that “... they have got to realise that to reduce the risk they have to start looking at heating babies’ rooms” could be dangerous. —Yours, etc.,
