Tornado leaves trail of damage at Waitara

PA New Plymouth A tornado left a trail of wreckage through New Plymouth and Waitara yesterday as people took cover from flying debris. “It was lucky no-one was killed,” said one shocked resident after a jumbo-sized garden shed crashed into her neighbour’s backyard. Moving from the northwest off the Tasman Sea, the whirlwind tore into Fitzroy at 2 p.m. and continued on to Waitara.

It whipped up a cloud of glass, wood and iron, and wreaked havoc among usually quiet suburban streets. A motorist later said his car was spun around by the wind.

At Waitara, a 4m by 2m aluminium shed staked to the ground was lifted over two fences and landed more than 12m across the neighbouring yard. The flying garden shed knocked down a 4m tree and destroyed a washing line.
