Air N.Z. to enlarge 747 Jumbo fleet
By

travel editor Air New Zealand’s fleet of five Boeing 747 Jumbo jets will be enlarged. According to informed sources,, the airline expects to confirm an order tor a new Boeing 747-400 within the next two months. The model, the latest version of the successful 8747, will have an extended upper deck, fly-by-wire flight-deck technology, and an ultra longrange performance. The price is SUSI3S million (about SNZ26O million).
The first of the 747 series is due to roll out of Boeing’s Everett factory, north of Seattle, in October.
The jet’s long-range
performance would allow the airline to fly non-stop with a full payload between New Zealand and the United States. The enlarged upper deck is designed to cany as many as 67 economy- •
class passengers. Air New Zealand, however, would probably opt for an enlarged Pacific Class upstairs for business passengers.
The present five 8747200 aircraft have 16 busi-ness-class seats in their smaller “bubble.” If an order was confirmed by the end of May, delivery would be towards the end of 1988. The extra aircraft will enable the airline to open up new routes and increase existing services, particularly between New Zealand and Japan.
