Training for Islanders
A Government-funded course for Pacific Islanders began in New Brighton this week. The three 12-week courses in carpentry, light engineering, and personal development have been organised by the Salvation Army. The carpentry and engineering courses began this week, with six in each group, and the personal development course starts next week. The course co-ordina-tor, Mrs Janet Lafaele, said the scheme was the first of its kind in New Zealand. She said there was no limitation on age for the courses, and the personal development course still had vacancies. “It is really a life skills course, with emphasis on social skills and Pacific Island culture.” The course content includes understanding the legal system, education, filling out forms, dealing with banks, computing, personal rights, assertiveness, and nutrition. The cultural side concentrates on practical art and craft.
