Kiwi chick hatches
PA Hamilton A greater spotted kiwi chick had been hatched at the Otorohanga kiwi house, said the manager, Mr Eric Fox. Mr Fox said the chick was only the third greater spotted kiwi to be hatched in captivity. The other two were hatched at the National Wildlife Centre at Mount Bruce. Mr Fox said it was also the “third try” for the Otorohanga kiwi house. “The first try here was in 1985 when the chick
died on hatching. The second attempt, earlier this year, had a developing embryo but the chick died during incubation,” he said. Lucky No. 3, though, is being treated as a very special baby and being nursed with great care. “The chick is doing well and sleeping a lot, just like most babies. He or she — it is too early to tell which yet — is due to come out of the incubator tomorrow and be placed in a heated brooder,” Mr Fox said.
