Salmon catches
Sir, —The report (March 7) that the Ministry of Fisheries is concerned that trawlers are catching substantially more
salmon than in previous seasons is cold comfort to the thousands of salmon anglers throughout the country, many of whom have suspected that this situation would arise. When "ocean ranching” of salmon was negotiated it was always stressed by the then Minister of Fisheries that salmon anglers’ interests would be paramount and I am sure Dr Bob Mitchell had this in mind when he made his comments. What I cannot understand is the seeming reluctance of salmon farmers to join in this fight. If they do not, they can say goodbye to the profits that their shareholders expect. A strong and healthy “wild run” of salmon is essential to salmon farmers and salmon anglers alike. They had better get into the fight now. — Yours, etc DAVE HUGHEY. March 7, 1987.
