Welfare payments
Sir,—Why are so many people getting money for nothing through the Social Welfare system? Whether the unemployed are genuinely out of work of not, it should -not be a Government role to assist them. The same applies to a mother with two children on the solo parent benefit, or the retired couple on national superannuation. There is nothing “social” about the Government- taking my money and distributing it among the supposedly more needy. Uncharitable of me? Quite the opposite. If one just concentrates on supporting relatives and friends financially and emotionally if the need arises, then there should be no need whatsoever for Government interference in our social lives. Give, not grab, is the key to a happier society. — Yours, etc:, TONY BANKS. January 27, 1987.
