Beech scheme

Sir, —“Think Big” is alive and well, and Kerry Burke (January 27) is mistaken if he believes only “extremists” are concerned. Private enterprise is to be let loose in over 84,000 ha of North Westland beech forest, with no guarantee it has either the expertise or the commitment to manage this resource for production in perpetuity. Indeed, what commitment to an 80-year goal can be expected from any profitoriented business when the period of sale offered is for only 10 years, with right of renewal for a similar period? No prudent executive could justify much reinvestment out of current earnings with such short security against the time scale of the full operation. Any initial beech scheme must be small, because of present re-establishment uncertainties in relation to sites and species. This demands State management, and the unlikelihood of commercially acceptable early returns. The Government, by abolishing the Forest Service in favour of profits and preservation, has removed this option. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, January 30, 1987.
