Work contracts
Sir, —New Zealanders seem filled with indignation (righteous or selfish) because some gang members who might otherwise have been, receiving the unemployment benefit have been overpaid for sdme contract work schemes. The gangs did nothing illegal but “ripped off the system” and were grossly overpaid. I deplore it, but what about all the respectable people who engage in tax avoidance? Did those who made a fortune on shares last year “deserve” their profits? Do jumbo-jet pilots earn all their $130,000 or the Prime Minister all his $110,000? Do teachers (like myself) “deserve” twice as much as a labourer? In a system full of inequalities most people take what they can get — so did the gangs. Unfortunately, the controversy has focused attention on a few schemes that went wrong while dozens of worthwhile schemes on which people worked well are being ignored. — Yours, etc.,
DAVID CLOSE. January 30, 1987.
