Robber went in ‘blind’

PA Auckland A bumbling “blind” robber cut eye slits in his balaclava midway through an armed hold-up at a West Auckland hotel early yesterday. Police said that two robbers forced entry to the tavern about 4.40 a.m. One of the men was unable to see until he cut holes in his mask. The robbers, armed with a shotgun and a rifle, tied up the Huapai Tavern manager, Mr Kevin Fraser, and emptied the

tavern’s week-end takings from the safe. Tavern staff were yesterday cashing up to see how much money was taken. Mr Fraser was bound, but not injured. He freed himself and called the police at 6 a.m.

Tavern staff said Mr Fraser started work at the tavern a few days ago. He lived alone at the back of the building.

Police said the robbers may have left on foot, as no car was heard.
