Duck with arrow survives ordeal
Priscilla, the Muscovy duck shot with an arrow just before Christmas, has fully recovered from the ordeal.
She will be released this morning by Mr lan Fairweather, the veterinarian who removed the arrow 10 days ago. The duck was apparently shot shortly before Christmas, when she was seen by Burwood residents swimming on Horseshoe Lake with the arrow embedded in her side.
In spite of being unable to fly, she eluded all attempts to capture her until January 22. The duck, by then christened Priscilla, was finally cornered by a canoeist, Jeremy Phillips, aged 12, when the arrow became entangled in a flax bush. Mr Fairweather operated that evening, and
reported that the 45cm aluminium arrow had pinned the duck’s right wing to the body and penetrated the chest, only just missing the spine. The wound was badly infected but Priscilla had now fully recovered, said a veterinary practice nurse last evening.
The nurse said that the duck had been on antibiotics since the operation and had recovered with no hint of a relapse. She was now “fighting fit”.
She will be liberated at Horseshoe Lake before 9 a.m. today.
