Private hospital domestics to strike

Private hospital domestic workers will strike for three days in mid-Janu-ary. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Union, Mr Martin Moodie, said the dispute committee decided yesterday that any action would be deferred until January. “This is to extend Christmas good will to patients and to give employers the opportunity to have some back-room discussions with us because we believe there is still an opportunity to solve this dispute,” he said. Mr Moodie said the three-day action would probably be co-ordinated nationally. The action follows up the union’s rejection of the employers’ offer of a 6.5 per cent wage increase. The union wants parity with public hospital workers, which would require an increase of more than 11 per cent.
