Cup defence planned
PA Auckland New Zealand has not even qualified to challenge for the America’s Cup yet — but the Auckland Harbour Board is already planning to act as host for the 1990 defence. The board has set up a special committee headed
by Bob Carr to investigate the requirements for a cup defence. Other members of the committee are the deputy chairman, lan Forrest, Paul Titchener, Richard Holden and a general manager, Rob Cooper. “The defence of the
America’s Cup in Auckland would be a major event which would require additional planning and development of port facilities for competitors,” said Mr Cooper. “Of course, all is dependent on a New Zealand win at Fremantle.
