Tyson, Chavez honoured
NZPA-Reuter Mexico City The heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, of the United States, and the super featherweight holder, Julio Cesar Chavez, were yesterday named boxers of the year by the World Boxing Council (W.8.C.).
Tyson, aged 20, became the youngest world heavyweight champion when he knocked out Canada’s Trevor Berbick in the
second round of their Las Vegas clash last month. Chavez, a Mexican, defended his title five times during the year and was also named the most ex-
emplary boxer for being what the W.B.C. called “a gentleman outside the ring.” The fight of 1986 was the Puerto Rican Hector Camacho’s successful points defence of his lightweight crown against a compatriot, Edwin Rosario, in New York last June.
