Scott favoured to win motor-cycling

PA Wanganui Wanganui’s Richard Scott, on his $140,000 works Honda, will start favourite for the New Zealand international motor-cycle road racing circuit which begins at Wanganui on Friday and Saturday. Scott, fresh from a successful debut season on the tough British circuit and a win in a round of the European championship series, took line honours in last Sunday’s Geoff Perry Memorial race at Pukekohe. But he will come up against much stronger opposition, especially from

overseas riders, on the Wanganui cemetery circuit, and at Ruapuna on January 1 and 2. Scott won two of the Wanganui legs last Boxing Day and gained minor placings at Manfeild to finish fifth over all in the series, which was won by Auckland’s Rodger Freeth (Suzuki). Freeth, who suffered broken bones during a recent car rally in America, is not defending his title this season.

It will be left to Scott, Wellington’s Robert Holden (Suzuki), Brent Jones (Christchurch, Yamaha)

*and an expatriate, Gary Goodfellow (Suzuki), to provide the main New Zealand thrust this season.

They will encounter some strong overseas opposition, especially from the Scottish champion, Brian Morrison (Suzuki), a Briton, Dale Robinson (Suzuki), and the Trinder brothers, Craig (Suzuki) and Steve (now Honda).

Other overseas starters in the Pro-helmets-spon-sored Formula One class include a West German, Hans-Peter Herrman (Suzuki), and Jock Williams (Australia, Suzuki).
