Decisive winner of the Lion Northern Derby on his last visit to Alexandra Park and has the form on paper to be a royal chance again in his Messenger heat tomorrow. Invercargill SIMON RAE (Race 10), b g, 4yrs, Sir Dalrae-True Surprise; trained at Edendale by D. J. Baynes. Useful second in the corresponding race on the first day. Has only had four raceday starts and likely to improve further. Manawatu SOUND BELT (Race 4), br c, 2yrs, Sound Reason-Banco;
trained at Waverley By K. Gray. Unbeaten in three starts to date. Should keep his record intact here. Otago BLACK HEATH (Race B),br g, 3 yrs, by Grand PoppaShahranee; trained at Riccarton by B? R. Mills. Has sprinted brilliantly in training since winning at Greymouth last month. Dashing front runner and likely to be elusive at the end of 1200 m. Rangiora ASHLEY BRIGADE (Race 4), b g, 4 yrs, by LordshipAshley Star; trained at Rangiora by F. Murfitt. Bold finish for third to Happy Sunrise at Addington on December 11 at latest start. Will have to improve very little on that effort to come out on top. Waipa JOHN JUNIOR (Race 5), b g, 6yrs, Swinging Junior-Anna John; trained at Te Rapa by W. Morris. Appeared to be travelling well before losing his rider 500 m out at Avondale on December 13. Likely to make amends.
