Sangster appoints new trainer

NZPA-Reuter London The top owner and breeder, Robert Sangster, has appointed trainer, Barry Hills, to supervise the running of his historic racehorse establishment at Manton. The announcement came 24 hours after Sangster dismissed Michael Dickinson as his private trainer because of “fundamental differences of opinion.” But Hills will continue to run his own yard at nearby Lambourn, from where he trained 55 winners this season to finish sixth in the trainers’ table. Hills said: “I am delighted to reinforce my relationship with Robert. I intend to move some of my current string to Manton and I shall be discussing this with all my owners over the next few days.” Hills had emerged as one of the favourites to take over at the $2O million Wiltshire complex. Dickinson, the former “golden boy” of jump racing, had just completed his first year at the SNZ3B million Manton complex with only four victories

from 55 runners and total prize money of under $NZ57,600. Hills, aged 49, has been training for 17 years. One of his biggest successes came in 1973 when Rheingold, runner-up in the English Derby the year before, won the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe at Longchamp.
