Australian Airlines had no intention of pulling out of the ChristchurchHobart route, said the airline’s New Zealand manager, Mr Peter McClintock, yesterday. He was commenting on a statement made in “The Press” on Saturday by Tasmania’s Deputy Premier, Mr Geoff Pearsall. In an interview on air services, Mr Pearsall said there was a question over Australian Airlines’ link with Christchurch. Mr McClintock said his airline was committed to the service until the lease of the Qantas licence came up for review in 1989.
Australian Airlines had
been losing some passengers to Air New Zealand since it entered the route with a same-day service, he said.
“But we are still operating marginally profitably,” he said.
Mr McClintock said the airline planned to continue using Boeing 727 s on the route until next September when it would possibly switch to its new and smaller Boeing 7375.
The airline’s Christchurch manager, Mr lan Rivers, said discussions would be held with Air New Zealand next month to consider new fare incentives in a bid to stimulate traffic on the route. These fares would probably come into effect in the new year.
