Cashing in on Cup fever?

By

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor

New Zealand was urged to cash in on America’s Cup fever by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, on Saturday. Adding a light touch to the closing of the annual conference of the Travel Agents’ Association of New Zealand, Mr Moore said that if he had his way he would tag every contest possible as an America’s Cup event.

“I don’t care whether it is for spitting, Indian wrestling or cow-pat throwing, if the prize is an America’s Cup we would be on to a winner,” he said.

“The Yanks would send thousands of people down here to recover it.” On a more serious note, Mr Moore said tourism should be viewed as the premier industry of the future. But he warned that competition from other countries for the tourist dollar was getting stronger.

Mr Moore said he wanted to see more investment “built into the ground” in the form of new hotels. Such investment, he said, could not be easily whisked away.

The conference ended with a western-style barn dance at the Town Hall on Saturday evening.
