Double standards

Sir, —In reply to L. R. Wilkinson (October 8), I prefer to believe sources such as the representatives of oppressed black South Africans. The South African news media published excerpts of a report (July 18) of an interview with the South African Minister of Law and Order, Mr Louis Le Grange, by an editor and publisher, Mr Hugh Murray. Mr Murray asked Mr Le Grange: “Are you saying that although he (Nelson Mandela) is in jail he still has a leadership network that operates?” Mr Le Grange: “Oh yes; he is very well informed.” The so-called “terrorists” in South Africa have been portrayed as having little support from black South Africans. If the white minority Government really believed that, it would already have given black people the right to vote. I feel that the New Zealand Government has not gone far enough on sanctions. — Yours, etc.,

KENNETH EBER MARTIN. October 8, 1986.
