Matai Street East may become Helen Connon Street. The Riccarton Borough Council’s works and services committee discussed last evening a letter from the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mrs Margaret Austin, asking that the street name be changed to Helen Connon Street or Avenue. Miss Connon was the first woman to receive a master of arts degree from Canterbury University College and was the principal of Christchurch Girls’ High School from 1883 to 1894. She became Mrs Macmillan Brown. The committee decided
to approach residents of Matai Street and the Girls’ High School board of governors for their opinions.
