Rubbish worries council
Rubbish falling off the backs of trailers is worrying members of the Riccarton Borough Council. The Mayor of Riccarton, Mr Richard Harrington, said at the council’s works and services committee meeting last evening that he was “very concerned” about rubbish on the streets leading to the Parkhouse Road (Sockburn) transfer station.
Rubbish was falling off uncovered trailers being taken to the transfer station, he said. “I believe the people down there who are trying to keep the place reasonably tidy are battling against odds. They can hardly win,” he said. Cr Roy Lester, the council’s representative on the Metropolitan Refuse Committee, said it was not only uncovered
trailers that caused the problems. “I could prove definitely that a big percentage of the rubbish over the last few months has come from the industrial areas,” he said.
The committee decided to recommend to the Metropolitan Refuse Committee that people with improperly secured loads be refused entry to the stations.
