Timaru runners to fore

Most of the honours in the Pleasant Point-to-Temuka road race during the weekend went to the Timaru Harrier Club. The first runner home was Pat Sugrue. The Timaru veteran took full advantage of his 30mln handicap, running away from his three joint markers and crossing the finish line at Temuka in a time of lh 15min 3. For his efforts he collected the Arowhenua Cup and the Ken Cross Trophy.

Two Timaru runners recorded the fastest times in their grades. They were Doreen Dryden (senior women) and Chris Tobin (senior men) while Joseph Crichton and Judy Hawes were the first under-18 runners to finish in their sections. Timaru also won the Cameron Banner for fastest team with Tobin (48min 31s), Crichton (56min 435), Alister Lester (54min 595) and John Souter (56min 345).

Just over 100 runners competed in the race with contestants coming from

Dunedin, Christchurch and as far afield as Rotorua. Conditions were good for running but a north-easterly breeze and a flood-affected section of road slowed times a little. Before the race younger runners competed for South Island titles round the streets of Pleasant Point. Three titles went to Christchurch athletes and three to South Canterbury competitors.
