Cricketers promoted
New Brighton, as well as Merivale-Papanui, has been promoted to the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s senior A competition. The inclusion of New Brighton restores the top grade to eight teams after Woolston Working Men’s Club switched its allegiance to the Canterbury Cricket Association and the last-placed Christ-
church Working Men’s Club was demoted. Merivale-Papanui had already earned promotion by winning the senior B grade last summer, and Heathcote, Sumner, Upper Riccarton, Hoon Hay, Hornby and Southern Districts were assured ■ of remaining. After some consideration, the suburban management committee decided that New
Brighton, the senior B runner-up, should also be elevated. It has been consistent for some seasons, has sufficient depth within the club, and its captain and player-coach, Derek Burrell, led the representative XI in 1985-86.
New Brighton has nine teams in suburban competitions, two women’s sides, and 10 schoolboy teams.
