Speed skaters for Australia
New Zealand will have a team of seven competing in the Australian ice racing championships in Adelaide on Friday and Saturday. Apart from Andrew Nicholson, of Auckland, the speed skaters are all from Canterbury. The experienced Mark Atkinson will be joined by Tony Smith and Mike McMillen in the senior events, while Katrina McCallum and Shane Bradford have the intermedi-
ate titles as their aims and Bridget McCallum will be racing in the midget grade. Nicholson’s progress in the junior men’s championship will be watched with interest. A younger brother of the world championship racer, Chris, Nicholson won the Australian sub-junior title in Melbourne last year. Smith finished eighth over all in the senior men’s grade at the same championships,
one place ahead of McMillen. Smith was more consistent, but McMillen had the satisfaction of reaching two of the four finals whereas Smith missed all four.
Smith and Katrina McCallum, who set six records at the national 200 m and 400 m track championships at Lake Ida last month, were in excellent form at that outdoor meeting.
