N.Z. apprentices draw top rides at Te Awamutu

Special correspondent Auckland The draw for rides appears to have gone the way of the New Zealand apprentices in the two invitation races at the Waipa Racing Club’s meetings at Te Awamutu today. New Zealand apprentices secured all four likely favourites in the main race of the two, the $lO,OOO 8.0. P. Fertiliser International Handicap, and they also have the rides on the three top prospects in the other race, the T.H.C. Waitomo Resort Hotel Handicap. Nova Lady, Barusha and Hopscotch, which appear likely to dispute the finish in the $lO,OOO race, will be ridden by Chris Bain, of Otago (Nova Lady), Shane Treweek, of Takanini (Barusha) and Mark Heaney, of Hawke’s

Bay (Hopscotch). In the other race, Bain will be on Chapeau so he has a chance for a fine double. A Taranaki mare, Nova Lady managed only one win last season, in class three at Hawera, but she had several worthwhile minor placings as well, one of them close-up behind Eva Grace, at Te Rapa, and two fourth placings, in the Canterbury Gold Cup and Cuddle Stakes.

A performance as good as one of those would certainly put her into the finish today. Nova Lady’s latest form reads more moderately, but both Barusha and Hopscotch are recent winners.

Hopscotch, now a four-year-old, is racing more solidly, showing all the pace she displayed earlier and more stamina. She

ran a 1400 metres out strongly last time for a win at Paeroa, where the home straight is a more than average test. Hopscotch will be on her home course, too, which seems to count for something at Te Awamutu meetings. Chapeau, a four-year-old gelding from Te Rapa, was a late starter into racing but he won at his second attempt, a 1300 metre race at Pukekohe on June 20. From three starts meanwhile, he managed a second and a fourth. The fourth, at his latest appearance, was in a 1200 metres race at Ellerslie on August 9. Trudy Archer, from Cambridge, on Jackie, and Shane Treweek, on Barbie’s Boy, seem to hold the best chances among the others.
