Man tackled burglar

The Christchurch police have praised a man who apprehended a man alleged to have broken into the Democratic Party headquarters in Christchurch on Saturday evening.

The police subsequently "charged a man, aged 23, with burglary. He will appear in the District Court at a later date. “We don’t always recommend that people take on burglars, but we appreciate it in this case,”. said a spokesman for the Christchurch police.

The man, believed to. be

aged in his 30s, “knew how to handle himself,” said the spokesman.

The man’s attention was drawn to the party’s headquarters, in St Asaph Street, by suspicious noises about 8 p.m. on Saturday. He then apprehended the man alleged to have broken in.

Details of what happened are sketchy, but it is believed that a group of people playing housie nearby heard sounds of a struggle and called the police.
