Foxton sees itself as tourist mecca
PA Wellington The man who successfully chartered the first Concorde flight to New Zealand earlier this year is now channelling his energies to promoting Foxton as a tourist destination. Foxton is Mr Kenneth Irons’ hometown, a place he believes has “phenomenal” tourist potential, both in the domestic and the international market. He described Foxton as poised to become the Arrowtown of the North Island.
Foxton’s Tourist and Development Association has identified the town’s harmonious blend of commercial facades as ripe for restoration as a living example of an early New Zealand town. The association also plans to reconstruct the tram station built in Foxton during 1881 as a reception and information centre. The station would also be a departure point for a horse-drawn tram, to be reconstructed from drawings of carriages working in the last century.
