Love at first letter?
PA ’ Hamilton When Patricia Irvine, of Hamilton, replied to a request for a penpal she did not expect a proposal of marriage.
Miss Irvine, aged 19, answered the request of Richard Noble Akyin, of Ghana, for a penpal, which appeared in the “Waikato Times” earlier this year.
True to his middle name, Mr Akyin’s intentions seemed entirely noble. She received the reply on Tuesday. “He said he was going
to marry me and said nothing could come between our love,” said Miss Irvine. But he also wanted a dowry to go with the nuptials. “He asked for some clothes and a Walkman,” she said. Mr Akyin said he hoped to be with Miss Irvine in New Zealand by December’
She said she would write back to her suitor and tell him that she just wanted a penpal and not a husband. She’s not worried about his turning up on her doorstep. “We have shifted houses since I wrote to him,” she said. She said she knew that Ghana was a poor country and believes that her penpal wanted to leave.
