Hunting guides registered
Wellington reporter The registration of 23 professional hunting guides has been approved by the Minister of Forests and Lands, Mr Wetere.. They are the first to be recommended by the National Registration Committee set up earlier this year. The committee has set out strict criteria to maintain professional standards. Mr Wetere said the hunting industry was growing rapidly, particularly to serve overseas tourists, and guidelines were needed to protect both clients and guides. The guidelines include competence in scoring trophies and removing the capes in the field, the holding of passenger service licences and first aid certificates, and whether a guide has legal access to land.
Only 23 of 100 applicants to the committee were recommended and accepted for registration for the year ending June 30, 1987, but others are close to meeting the requirements and should be eligible soon.
A registration fee of $lOO will be charged for those approved, and a minimum concession fee of $lOO will also be charged when guides take clients on to State forest land.
Seven guides who are registered in the northern part of the South Island are A. P. Chamberlain (Christchurch), D. Drangsholt (Picton), A. C. Entwhistle (Nelson), T. B. Horton (Ward), G. D. E. Joll (Lake Tekapo), S. E. Peterson (Franz Josef), and T. A. Pierson (Christchurch).
