Last chance to gauge players
The Canterbury representative squash selectors will have their final opportunity to gauge the performance of candidates for the inter-districts team when the High School Old Boys Open tournament is contested over the next four days. It is likely that'the selectors will name the team for the national championships at Timaru in early September some time next week. The only notable omissions from the men's and women’s open draws are Paul and Carolyn Viggers, and Justine Marriott, having a rare week-end off. All three are already assured of team positions.
The men’s draw is particularly strong, headed by Robbie Burnett, who has been having a good season on the
Moro players’ circuit, Elliott Jones, Craig Hibbert and Mark Crosbie.
Freda Walker, Kathy Hargreaves, Ann Harliwich and Donna Church are the top women’s seeds, though the No. 5 seed, Toni Bird, could cause some upsets after her fine win over Marriott in the inter-club competition last week. The tournament, jointly sponsored;by Naturally New Zealand and Blackwell Motors, has attracted a field of three men’s and two women’s draws. The Marist club courts need to be used as well as those at the host club, High School Old Boys. In the open grade the semi-finals will be .played on Saturday -evening, and the finals about 3 p.m. on Sunday, all at the Old Boys courts.
