Warning on hotel building

PA Wellington Wellington’s hotel-build-ing is great for the city but cannot continue at the present rate much longer, according to the Greater Wellington Promotion Council. The council said that more than 460 beds were being added to Wellington’s running total of 2070. Add to this another 250 beds proposed for the hotel on the old Post Office site and 200 beds at the recently announced Wakefield Centre in Courtenay Place, and the total came to just under 1000 new beds in the city in the next three years; The council’s chief executive, Ms Barbara Treister, warned against getting into the situation where the city had an over-supply of beds. “We are on the edge of a tourism boom and we need the top-class hotels but we won’t be wanting any more for a while after the ones that are already planned,” she said.
