Handicapped catered for

PA Wellington Organisers of the Pope’s visit to New Zealand in November are taking steps to cater for handicapped and disabled people at public functions, an official said. The Papal visit director, Mr Pat Gaines, said the Disabled Persons’ Assembly chief executive officer, Mr John Munro, had offered to supply technical advice on access to venues for people with mobility difficulties.

The assembly was keen to ensure that venues were accessible. Mr Gaines said he was confident needs could be met and was alerting regional organisers to Mr Munro’s offer. A sign language interpreter for deaf people would be provided at the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch public functions. This would mean setting aside a special area so interpreters would be able to see and hear

everything that happened. Mr Gaines said organisers in each centre would also arrange medical care on site. “We’re aware that such historic gatherings will bring together a great diversity of people, and it is our job to ensure that we cater for them and their special needs,” he said. The Pope’s 48-hour visit will begin on November 22.
