Proposed track alterations announced

Details of the proposed restructuring of the Ashburton galloping track have been announced by the president of the Ashburton County Racing Club, Mr Don/Stuart.

Fears that the project would drastically reduce the size of the track have proved to be groundless, and it is planned that the new circuit will be 1866 metres in circumference, with a home straight of 400 m.

Although the track will remain left-handed, the basic shape will be similar to that of Ellerslie,

with the starting limit likely to be 16. The various starting points on the course will ensure runners receive a lengthy run before a bend is reached; the 1600 m

starting point giving runners a particularly long run of 642 m. The width of the track will be 80m in the home straight, and 60m in the back straight and around the top bend. Extensive work will

also be carried out to upgrade the training tracks inside the allweather trotting track.
