Garth Ivil set for good day

Special correspondent Wellington The Levin trainer, Garth Ivil, could have a day to remember when the Levin Racing Club stages its Ryder Stakes meeting at Levin today. Ivil will saddle up Arctic Wolf in the $20,000 Allegra Park Ryder Stakes and then later on has Zaheer in the Lion Red Levin Winter Cup.

Both are grand chances, though the opposition facing them is daunting. Arctic Wolf has only raced once, for a two length win in the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings last month. It was a success that looked rich in potential and today Arctic Wolf has drawn handy and will be ridden by David Walsh. Success in the Ryder brings automatic inclusion into the Bayer Classic at Levin later in the year and Ivil has expressed a desire for Arctic Wolf to tackle that race. Today he will have tne record book against him for the last Central Districts success in the race was back in 1973. Since then all the winners have come from the north and all have been colts. Arctic Wolf is a colt and he comes up against Ryder opposition which, by the previously high standards of the race, is not the strongest. During the early 80s, the winners were Altitude, Red Tempo and Beechcraft, but that

class doesn’t seem to be here. The Ryder field has totalled just 11 wins between them. Five are laststarts winners. They are Arctic Wolf, Pacific Star, Ivashow, Sir Zeus and Radiate. Pacific Star is the likely favourite, even if he is a gelding, albeit by Star Way. Trained at Cambridge, Pacific Star has won both his races at Franklin last May in the Juvenile by a head and then the Crosbie just under a month ago by four lengths. Ivashow has won two of his seven starts, but the wins have come at his most recent outings, both at Ellerslie, the Saratoga Breeders’ and the Acron 1300. Colin Jillings trains him and a trip to Levin is a rare one for the stable. Sir Zeus beat all but Arctic Wolf in his second outing at Hastings. He then went on to win the Woburn at Trentham in totally different ground. A colt by Amyntor, he shows promise.

Radiate won the Juvenile in the Trentham mud by six lengths. She is by Star Way as well, but as a filly, she will be up against the odds in this race. Sweet Bid is a filly which won at Te Rapa last May and then was fourth on the first day of the Northern meeting at Ellerslie. Zaheer, after two thirds at Hastings, will be looking for winning form today. He has four wins and four placings to show from his nine starts and is well above average. In the Winter Cup though he has the job in front of him, particularly with Always Summer, Purple Crown and Bronze Valley at the head of the handicap, not to mention the northern mare, Apricot Road, along with Melbeck, So Regal and Noble Bay. The Levin Winter Cup is the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The first leg is the class 2 Kelvinator Handicap, and My Ballerina, Corday and Silver Marie are a likely trio.
