Tom’s Dice retired
PA Wellington Tom’s Dice has been retired from racing and has returned to the farm of his owner, Mrs Viv Deery, and her husband, Cliff. It was decided after the seven-year-old finished seventh in last Saturday’s New Zealand Handicap that his racing days were over. “There’s nothing wrong with him at all,” said Mrs Deery. “In fact, he’s in excellent condition. It’s just pointless to keep him grinding away without winning.” Tom’s Dice, a chestnut gelding by Tiparillo from False . Promise, returned to the Deerys’ farm at Kawakawa Bay on Sunday and he is to be used by Mr Deery as a farm hack. Tom’s Dice had 43 starts for nine wins and 14 minor placings for total stake earnings of $102,195. He was the star winter performer in 1984, running second to Deb’s Mate in the Cornwall Handicap, then winning the Owens Trophy, New Zealand Handicap, Te Awamutu Centenary Cup ' and Mitchelson Cud.
