Drug theft raises fears
A big quantity of Panadeine tablets stolen from a Christchurch drug warehouse could fetch up to $300,000 if turned into homebake morphine. Detective Senior-Ser-geant Paul Johnstone, of the Christchurch drug squad, said 200,000 tablets stolen on Sunday morning could be transformed into 200 grams of homebake. A gram of homebake was now selling for between $lOOO and $l5OO “on the street.” However, the amount of homebake that could be made depended on the
way it was refined, he said. Burglars broke into Sterling Pharmaceuticals New Zealand, Ltd, in Wainoni by forcing their way into an adjoining workshop and cutting a hole in the wall. Detective Senior-Ser-geant Johnstone said it was a “major haul” and the police were concerned about the big amount of homebake that might be made. “We are always concerned when that amount of drugs goes missing,” he said.
