Man admits abusive telephone calls

PA Dunedin A man made a series of abusive telephone calls to a radio station to complain about the lack of, and slowness of, race results, the District Court at Dunedin was told. Mario Vincenzo Omerovic, aged 41, a seaman, admitted a charge of using abusive language in a telephone call to Radio 4ZB when he appeared before Judge Jamieson yesterday. Sergeant Alan Bremner said the radio station had had numerous offensive and abusive calls of a similar nature over the last few months.

Over an 11-day period the telephones on which

the calls were received were monitored. On May 17 an offensive call received by the station was traced to Omerovic’s address.

Omerovic initially denied making the call but later admitted he was responsible, explaining that the race scratchings had not been on when they should have been.

Omerovic said that although he did not usually swear, when he had been drinking his tongue was loosened and he did not always remember what he had said. Omerovic was convicted and ordered to make reparation of $547 to the Post Office.
