Bank child care facilities urged

PA Wellington The Human Rights Commission says childcare facilities are needed for staff in trading banks. A commission progress report on an equal employment opportunity programme among trading banks reviews their efforts so far and calls for further moves to provide childcare facilities. The report says adequate work-related childcare facilities are a necessary part of equal opportunity programmes.

The equal opportunity programme is being mounted in response to earlier complaints of sex discrimination against women working in banks. The banks acknowledged that past practices had disadvantaged some groups of employees, including women. The banks also undertook to put the matters right, according to the commission. But the banks rejected the charge of discrimination.
