M.P.’s bill seeks pool fencing
PA Wellington The Labour member of Parliament for Western Hutt, Mr John Terris, wants 1.2 m high fences around backyard swimming pools, motel pools and outside spa pools. Mr Terris successfully moved the introduction of a private member’s bill, the Fencing of Swimming Pools Bill. The legislation says that the 1.2 m fences could be constructed from any safe material such as wood, steel or polypropolene mesh. P£r Terris’s bill requires ,
local authorities to undertake surveillance through the issue of building permits.
The legislation requires ratepayers to build properly approved fences with self-locking gates. Mr Terris first introduced a private member’s bill on pool fencing in 1982 but the legislation was buried in the select
committee stages. The Opposition member for Selwyn, Miss Ruth Richardson, was the one Opposition speaker to support the legislation.
