'Essential service’ call for ferries
PA Wellington Wellington’s Chamber of Commerce will support moves to make the Cook Strait ferries an essential service and so prevent strikes. At a monthly chamber council meeting recently, a council member, Mr Steve Reidy, said the ferries should be declared an essential service to “stop the nonsense once and for all.”
Mr Reidy said that during the recent ferry strike he had watched with amazement the “incredible antics” of some of those involved. The chamber president, Mr Ray Matthews, said New Zealand could no longer afford the luxury of having the transport system threatened by “three mariners complaining about loss of rank.”
