Harbour bridge welds fail

PA Auckland New welds on Auckland’s cracked Harbour Bridge are not strong enough, according to the job manager for the Ministry of Works, Mr Clark Hyland. Of 330 welds so far, 20 needed repairing, which was “unreasonably high,” he said. Work was already two weeks behind schedule, and the Ministry was Considering replacing the welding technique. Mr Hyland said the repairs had slowed during the last two weeks. Nightcrew staff had been cut back from seven to five, but the extra staff would return when the repair procedure was improved. The technique was relatively new in New Zealand; it had been used on hydro dams, but not bridges, he said.
