Palestinians

Sir,—Joel Manyam’s attempt to justify Israeli aggression (April 7) is ill-founded. Partition itself — division of Palestine against the wishes of the majority population — had no basis in international law, hence its rejection by the Arab world. Nevertheless this rejection gave

Israel no territorial rights to Palestine land. Her subsequent military acquisition of that land is specifically held inadmissible by SC 242 and 338, which call for immediate Israeli withdrawal without imposing pre-conditions or negotiation of terms. The alleged “invasion” of Israel was not undertaken by Palestinians but by external Arab States. This “invasion” was pre-dated by a month by Israeli military action against Palestinian Arab communities. The Jordanian army, when it entered Arab Palestine, found Israeli forces had already advanced into the Arab state. From the 1945 terrorist campaign against the British to the current military oppression of the Palestinians, Israel’s use of illegal force as a policy instrument is well documented. — Yours, etc., ALISTAIR PRINGLE. April 12, 1986.
