National and GST

Sir,—When Mr McLay announced that National would repeal GST I breathed a sigh of

relief. I recognised that even if it 1 took a lot of hard work to keep him to that promise, at least it > had been made. However, with. the change of leadership to MrBolger, that promise must now ’ be restated. I now challenge Mr • Bolger to stand up and promise" to repeal GST. Without this bold., stand I am sure that National will be struggling to maintain its present ranking. — Yours etc., z MARIE GREEN. April 14, 1986.

[Mr Bolger, Leader of the • Opposition, replies: “The National Party’s policy on GST • has been clearly and publicly stated many times. First, we are in favour of a move towards. indirect taxation. However, GST is a costly and complicated method of Indirect taxation and ; 1000 extra public servants are required to administer it. . National will proceed with the • proposed tax cuts to be introduced on October 1, but we will repeal GST and replace it with a simpler, indirect tax system ■> which is fairer, less complicated ' 5 and less cosfly.”]
