Forest policies
Sir,—City dwelling environmentalists are continuing their emotional barrage, to create opposition to legal, soundly based indigenous forest management activities. Thousands of birds will not die. Forests will not be eliminated, or jobs exported. The Forest Service is not logging reserves. Native forests in Westland exceed 1 million hectares, and most are reserved or protected. Certain Westland beech forests are managed for valuable, high quality timber. Both use of waste wood and forest regeneration are essential facets. Wildlife values remain high. Tourism and forestry are complementary uses. Our coal now keeps your port open. But only our forests are continuously renewable. Both our futures jointly rely on them.—Yours, etc.,
MICHAEL ORCHARD. Hokitika, April 12, 1986.
