Bank deposits up
PA Wellington Total deposits at trading banks increased by 34.5 per cent over the year to January, the same growth rate as that recorded for the year to December, the Reserve Bank said.
Growth in total lending by trading banks in the year to January was 20.2 per cent lower than that in recent months.
In seasonally adjusted terms, deposits increased over January by 0.4 per cent, compared with the decrease of 1.1 per cent
recorded for December.
Seasonally adjusted, lend-
ing increased by 1 per cent in January, compared with a fall of 0.7 per cent for December.
Post Office Savings Bank deposits increased by a provisional 9.8 per cent for the year to January, compared with 9 per cent for the year to December.
In adjusted terms, deposits increased by 1.1 per cent during January, compared with an increase of 0.9 per cent during December. POSB lending growth, in adjusted terms, was 0.5 per cent over January, continuing a downward trend in lending growth since July.
