Johnny Carson loses case
NZPA-AP Los Angeles
The American talk show host, Johnny Carson, failed to win a court order forcing the “National Enquirer” to reveal the source of a disputed article about his divorce from his former wife, Joanna. A Superior Court judge, Jerry Fields, told Carson’s lawyer, Steven Davis, that he did not think alternatives to identifying the source of the article had been exhausted. “I think you have some more work to do,” Judge Fields told Mr Davis. Carson, aged 60, claims in a lawsuit that the tabloid’s cover and Inside headlines and statements in the June 19, 1984, story were written and published even though the “Enquirer” knew they were false. The article reported that Carson had agreed to a divorce settlement of SUS 32 million ($6O million) to SUS 42 million ($7B million).
A divorce settlement reached in August gave Joanna Carson SUS 2.2 million ($4.1 million) in support payments over five years, and more than SUS2 million ($3.7 million) in stocks and bonds and various personal property. t
