Former police sergeant asked to back allegations
PA Dunedin Inquiries into allegations that three Dunedin police officers misused the Wanganui computer would be made if a former police sergeant put some substance to his allegations, said the Dunedin district police commander, Chief Superintendent Ross McLennan, on Monday. Mr McLennan was commenting on a recent report in “The Press” that a former police sergeant said police abuse of the
computer was fairly common, ranging from finding out the names of “women seen in cars to supplying information to vehicle repossession agents.” Mr McLennan said he was aware that allegations had been made that some “unnamed police in Dunedin” had misused the computer in relation to repossessing motorvehicles. “From what I can make out,” he said, “the former sergeant is talking about alleged events some years
ago. “We would need specifics to investigate the matter further. Inquiries would no doubt be made if the former sergeant put some substance to his allegations. “The facts could then be established one way or another,” said Mr McLennan. The Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, has called for an inquiry into alleged breaches of the Wanganui computer by the police.
