Jews in the Soviet Union
Sir, — The recent controversy about Jews in the U.S.S.R. featuring the opinions of the legendary M. Creel and his many adversaries, contains a lesson to us all. The fact
that different people can reach such radically different positions on the issue when substantially the sameinformation is available to each seems to bear out the view that each "... hears what he wants to hear/ and disregards the rest.” What benefit is discussion among such people? It is important to take a tablespoon of salt with Western opinions about Russian activities, yet anti-Jewish feeling does have a long history in that part of Europe. Jew-baiting, however, is not socialist dogma anywhere. I believe that while political systems may change overnight, people’s prejudices have much greater inertia. It will be no easier for the Soviets to free themselves of anti-Semitism than it is for the Americans to break the K.K.K. — Yours, etc., PETER ARNOLD. January 13, 1986.
