Equality for men

Sir,—“Equality” is seen as something different by each sex. Women do not mean “sameness” by it (obviously). For me, “alike in value” comes near to its meaning. To ask men to stop physical abuse of all sorts against us is not asking for favours or preferential treatment, as J. M. Tocker suggests. We have a human right not to be victims of male problems, as do individuals in any society. Opening doors and such courtesies of the upper classes are a veneer which hides the fact of women’s lower status by making them feel respected and special. Ways of preventing change include brainwashing the agitators into thinking that the change has already taken place, so when G. P. Bretherton implies that women are the privileged sex, I suggest he does some homework.—Yours, etc., NAOMI ROBERTS. January 13, 1986.
